Before I get back to chugging Guayakis and playing Skyrim for the rest of the night, I thought I would talk about something that’s very relevant this time of year
Christmas is just around the bend (first and last time I ever use that expression), and I’m sure some of you out there are better than me an actually buy gifts for your friends are searching for a prefect gift for your geeky friend.
Look no further, my friends. I am here to present you the official Guide To Buying Your Geeky Friend The Most Awesome Present In The World Ever.
The name is still in the works.
First Up I have Jawbone Up bracelet (please tell me that joke didn’t just go to waste). I think that every technology lover needs one of these. Not only is it a super cool gadget, it encourages you to get out of your desk and take a walk or work out. This thing tracks your steps, can document what you ate, and tells you how long you’ve been working out for. However, the main feature I think people love is it tracks your sleep. I don’t know HOW this thing does it, but it can tell your how many hours you were in deep sleep, as opposed to light sleep, and if you woke up at all in the night. I don’t know, I didn’t make it but it’s SICKK. Definitely should be at the top of your list this year.
Beats by Dre are desired by many, afforded by few. It’s hard to convince yourself to spend anywhere between 200-400 smackers on a pair of headphones. The fannywangs are a good alternative, but are still around $150 and have the dumbest name ever. I don’t know how that got approved. But if you’re looking for a pair of super duper cool looking, FUNCTIONAL, headphones you need to look into Urbanears. They’ll run you about fifty bucks on amazon and they come in EVERY COLOR YOU CAN THINK OF. Want mustard colored headphones? Done. Want shit brown? Of course. I’d say play it safe and go with a nice white pair. If your geek is crafty they can doodle on them or something. I don’t know. I’m not crafty.
I don’t know if I can put a website on this list or not, but I’m going to because it’s MY LIST. I’m sure you guys have heard of Think Geek, but if you haven’t, prepare to spend every last cent you have to your name. There is not one thing on this site I wouldn’t want to own. It ranges from super cool gadgets, to nerdy pillows, or t-shirts. While this site does separate a lot of stuff into “Gifts for him” and “Gifts for her” (Which I WHOLE HEARTEDLY HATE. I hate hate hate anything that separates things between guys and girls unless it’s clothing. Who says that a stargazer or a ocket ship lego set is only for guys? Or that no guy has every wanted an eazy bake oven before? BIGGEST. PET. PEEVE) if you dig around you will be able to find some SICK stuff. Also check out thisiswhyi’mbroke.com, but be warned, the website name is accurate.
THIS ONE IS ESSENTIAL. AND CHEEP. IF YOU ARE GOING TO BUY ANYONE ANYTHING IT SHOULD BE THIS. WHY IS THIS ONE NOT AT THE TOP OF THE LIST? WHO KNOWS. I’m a mac user, so I’m going to be talking about the mac version of it, but there is a windows counterpart I’m sure. You NEED to buy your geek a Mini Displayport to HDMI Adapter. I’m assuming that the Windows version would be a VGA to HDMI? But essentially, this turns any HDTV into a computer monitor. That may seem totally pointless, but if you’re a big fan of HULU or any other media streaming site, it allows you to watch it on your TV instead of on your screen. Also it makes group Facebook creeping easier. Not that I do that. Don’t get roped into a super high priced one! I was at Best Buy and I saw one for $30 but I went home and found one for TWO DOLLARS on amazon (shipping made it about 5 but still, HUGE DEAL).
This one is not only for your friendly neighborhood geek. I don’t think there is anyone who wouldn’t love this gift. I know it seems unconventional, but consider donating to a charity in someone’s name. You could do something simple, like donating $5.00 to an online or local charity per person, or you could donate $100 to a charity and say that it was in the name of everyone on your shopping list! I suggest Unified Theater as your charity. If you haven’t already read my post on them, please do. This group is LIFE CHANGING.
If you’re an iPhone user and you haven’t updated to IOS 5, you probably never will. I’m sure you geek was waiting hours to update their phone the day it was released. With Apple’s new “iCloud” feature, you’re allowed to sync all of your music, photos, and documents wirelessly. The only downside is that you can only sync music bought from the Apple store wirelessly. Unless you pay $25 a year for iTunes Match, that is. iTunes Match takes all of your files, matches them with the version of the song in the apple store, and swaps it out. This also guarantees that your music is going to be good quality. Consider buying someone a year of it.
Last up is not going to be for everyone. You can buy a domain name super cheep now. I got mine for $5.00 a year. I pay a monthly price to be able to host it on Squarepsace, but sites like Blogger and Tumblr will host them for free. It would be a super cool and meaningful gift if you bought someone a domain and linked it to a site like Blogger. Not many people realize how easy and affordable this is, so you will look like a high baller if you buy one for them.
If anyone has any more ideas feel free to leave them in the comments!
